The 48-story Time & Life Building, developed by The Rockefeller Group in partnership with Time Inc. and designed by Harrison Abramovitz & Harris, holds a special place in Rockefeller Center history. When the building opened in 1959, it marked Rockefeller Center’s expansion to the west side of Avenue of the Americas.

As home to Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, People, Money, and other magazines, the Time & Life Building has long been an around-the-clock nerve center for international media.

More recently, SportsNet NY has come to the building, televising sports programming from the street-level studio it opened in spring 2006.

The Time & Life Building features a broad plaza and fountain pool and numerous amenities. Ted’s Montana Grill, created by CNN founder Ted Turner and restaurateur George McKerrow, Jr., opened in fall 2006 at 110 W. 51 Street. The underground Concourse provides weatherproof access to more than one hundred shops and services throughout Rockefeller Center.

Time Inc. sold its 45% interest in the building to The Rockefeller Group in 1987 upon signing a long-term lease renewal. In 1999 Time Inc. again signed a long-term lease to renew its space and expand its presence. Time Inc.’s renewal was the largest real estate transaction signed in New York City in 1999.

The building has been maintained meticulously since its opening, and its operating systems have been upgraded at regular intervals as technology advances and equipment lifecycles warrant.

At the turn of the millennium, building engineers constructed a one-of-a-kind heating and cooling plant that allows them to switch deftly among natural gas, steam, and electricity to optimize operations and apply the most favorable fuel prices. Shortly afterward, The Rockefeller Group renovated and upgraded the lobby and public plaza areas to advance the building’s standing among America’s finest corporate headquarters.
